Kiambu peaberry
Wamuguma is a washing station in Gatundu, in the north of Kiambu County, sitting at 1,600–1,800 masl on the slopes of the Aberdare Range. Kiambu doesn't get the same attention as Nyeri or Kirinyaga, but it consistently produces intensely sweet, complex coffees with phosphoric acidity and floral notes, tree tomato is a flavour that comes up often. This lot is sorted to peaberry only: a natural mutation where one bean develops instead of two, occurring in roughly 5% of all coffee. The result is a rounder, denser bean that many find sweeter and more concentrated in character.
Ritho FCS
Wamuguma and the nearby Handege factory together form the Ritho Farmers Cooperative Society, founded in 1972 and now counting 2,548 active members farming across 499 hectares. The station is named after a local figure, Muguma, who was known for supporting the community's coffee efforts. Many growers in the area fertilise using cow manure rather than agrochemicals, a practice common across Kiambu's dairy-farming communities.
